Frances – Cranes Above the Sea

November 2018. Private Party. Namensgebender Titel: punschextravaganza. Das sagt schon alles aus und dem ist fast nichts hinzuzufügen. Stilvoll, mit Grandezza. Ich kannte lediglich die Gastgeberin und das sind ja bekanntlich die besten Parties. Fremde, mit denen Small Talk mit (möglichem) Tiefgang ein Leichtes ist. Ein guter Mix aus Zugezogenen und internationalen Menschen, alle offen und sympathisch, soweit wir in Berührung kamen.

Frances ist mir von Anfang an durch Ihre äußerst sympathische, unaufdringliche Warmherzigkeit aufgefallen. Sie ist Amerikanerin und spricht fließend Deutsch. Ich merke, dass sie mutig ist und keine Scheu hat, sich in einer Fremdsprache auszudrücken.

Das Gegenteil ist mir widerfahren, als ich das erste Mal Paris besuchte und im Frühstückraum des Bed & Breakfast (B&B) einen Amerikaner, ein Klavierlehrer, kurz sprach, ob er ein paar Worte Französisch gelernt habe. Er verneinte und meinte: „Englisch wird doch auf der ganzen Welt gesprochen. Wozu eine andere Sprache lernen?“ Das verschlug mir die Sprache.

Frances lernt gerne Sprachen und reist gerne. Sie war in Südkorea und hat einfach Koreanisch gelernt. Sie liebt auch das Essen. Und sie lernt Französisch in einem Sprachkurs. Ich bewundere Ihren Fleiß und Ihre Disziplin. Wie sie sich mit Grammatik auseinandersetzt. Nicht so meins, ich gebe es zu. Ich lerne eher intuitiv.

Als ich eine Übersetzerin für meine Homepage brauchte, war sie glücklicherweise zur Stelle, hat nach Ihrer Arbeit in einem Übersetzungsbüro noch fleißig bis in die tiefsten Abendstunden und mit größter Sorgfalt meine Texte ins Englische übersetzt. Sie hat mitgedacht und alles, wirklich alles nachrecherchiert. Wertvolle Hinweise gegeben. Das ist unbezahlbar. Mein größter Dank und meine blaue Japanjacke ‚Kraniche über dem Meer‘ als ‚Entlohnung‘.

Die Einladung für dieses Jahr ist bereits raus: „punschextravaganza – the return“. Einige bekannte Gesichter werde ich dort wiedersehen, auch Frances. Ich freue mich schon drauf, auch wenn ich nicht lange bleiben kann.

November 2018. private party. Name-giving title: punschextravaganza. That says it all and there is almost nothing to add. Stylish, with grandeur. I only knew the hostess and as we all know, these are the best parties. Strangers with whom small talk with (possible) depth is easy. A good mix of newcomers and international people, all open and sympathetic, as far as we came into contact.

Frances struck me from the start with her extremely likeable, unobtrusive warm-heartedness. She is American and speaks fluent German. I notice that she is courageous and not afraid to express herself in a foreign language.

The opposite happened to me the first time I visited Paris and in the breakfast room of the Bed & Breakfast (B&B) I briefly asked an American, a piano teacher, if he had learned a few words of French. He replied in the negative, saying, “English is spoken all over the world. Why learn another language?” That left me speechless.

Frances enjoys learning languages and traveling. She was in South Korea and just learned Korean. She also loves food. And she is learning French in a language class. I admire your diligence and discipline. The way she struggles with grammar. Not so mine, I admit it. I learn more intuitively.

When I needed a translator for my homepage, she was fortunately on the spot, and after her work in a translation agency, she diligently translated my texts into English until the deepest hours of the evening and with the greatest care. She thought along and researched everything, really everything. She gave valuable hints. That is priceless. My greatest thanks and my blue Japanese jacket ‘Cranes over the Sea’ as ‘reward’.

The invitation for this year is already out: “punschextravaganza – the return”. I will see some familiar faces there again, including Frances. I’m looking forward to it, even if I can’t stay long.
